Hammer

Double the bet mid-hole. The other side plays on or concedes. Nerve, priced.

The pressure game. Every hole is worth the base stake — until somebody throws the hammer, doubling it. The other side either plays on at the new price or concedes the hole at the old one. Throw it back and it doubles again.

The rules

Two fixed sides, net best ball decides the hole, and a halved hole pays nothing however hard it was hammered. The hammer is thrown out loud, whenever a side smells blood — after a blocked drive, over a missed green, on the tee if you're feeling rich. Agree whether there's a cap. There's rarely a cap.

How it settles

$2 base. They hammer after your drive finds sand; you hammer back off a holed bunker shot: ×4, $8 a man on one hole, and the walk to the next tee is very quiet.

Rivalry scores Hammer live — the rules stated on the first tee, the money running along the bottom of the card, and the settle done to the dollar when the last putt drops. The round goes into your group's permanent record, because a game this good deserves to be remembered past the car park.

Some scores take years to settle.

Rivalry is in closed beta with a handful of groups. Leave an email and we’ll tell you when there’s room.
