Snake

Three-putt and it's yours. Whoever holds it at the last pays everybody.

The cruelest side game and the most beloved. One snake, all round: three-putt and you're holding it. It changes hands with every three-putt, and whoever holds it walking off the eighteenth pays every other player.

The rules

That's the whole rule. The terror is the mechanism — a two-footer on 18 that would mean nothing in stroke play means everything when you're holding the snake. Some groups double it every time it moves; agree before someone's holding a $40 snake.

How it settles

$5 snake. Chris takes it on the 3rd, unloads it on Dave at the 11th, Dave hands it to you on the 16th. You lag the 18th stone dead. Dave, somehow, three-putts the 18th: $5 to each of you, and it's the only thing anyone remembers.

Rivalry scores Snake live — the rules stated on the first tee, the money running along the bottom of the card, and the settle done to the dollar when the last putt drops. The round goes into your group's permanent record, because a game this good deserves to be remembered past the car park.

Some scores take years to settle.

Rivalry is in closed beta with a handful of groups. Leave an email and we’ll tell you when there’s room.
