Wolf

A rotating captain, a choice on every tee, and the lone wolf multiplier.

The thinking golfer's foursome game. A different player is the Wolf on each hole, hitting last from the tee and choosing — after watching each drive — whether to take that player as a partner or turn them down.

The rules

The Wolf watches the drives one at a time. Take a partner and it's two against two for the hole. Turn everyone down and go lone wolf: one against three, for double. Some groups double again for declaring lone wolf before anyone hits — blind wolf, for the brave and the behind.

Best ball decides the hole at the agreed stake, doubled when the wolf goes alone. The rotation means everyone captains the same number of holes; the last few holes usually go to whoever is losing, by agreement.

How it settles

$5 base. On the 7th the Wolf turns down three ugly drives, goes alone, and wins the hole: $10 from each of the three. On the 8th he tries it again. There's a lesson in the 8th.

Rivalry scores Wolf live — the rules stated on the first tee, the money running along the bottom of the card, and the settle done to the dollar when the last putt drops. The round goes into your group's permanent record, because a game this good deserves to be remembered past the car park.

Some scores take years to settle.

Rivalry is in closed beta with a handful of groups. Leave an email and we’ll tell you when there’s room.
