Gruesomes

Two against two — and the other side chooses which of your drives you have to play.

Also called Bloodsomes, for reasons that become clear on the first par five. Both partners drive; the opposition then picks which of the two balls you must play, and they will not pick the good one. Alternate shots home from there.

The rules

One match over the round, holes up and down as in any match play, the stake to each player on the winning side. A halved match pays nobody.

The strategy is entirely in the tee box: there is no point both of you flushing it, and enormous value in the man who can put one in play while his partner tries to drive the green.

How we play it

Enter the score the pair actually made — the app cannot see which drive was chosen and does not need to. It settles as a match; the format is the agreement made on the first tee, written down so nobody relitigates it on the seventh.

How it settles

$20 the match. They make you play your partner's block into the trees on 3, 7 and 12 — you halve two of them anyway and win 2&1.

Rivalry scores Gruesomes live — the rules stated on the first tee, the money running along the bottom of the card, and the settle done to the dollar when the last putt drops. The round goes into your group's permanent record, because a game this good deserves to be remembered past the car park.

Some scores take years to settle.

Rivalry is in closed beta with a handful of groups. Leave an email and we’ll tell you when there’s room.
