Side game · exactly 4

Vegas

Two scores make one number, and a birdie flips the other side's.

The team game with the famous scoring: partners' scores concatenate into one two-digit number, lower digit first. A 4 and a 5 is 45. The gap between the two teams' numbers is what the hole pays.

The rules

Both scores, low digit first — unless the other side birdies, which flips your number high-first: your 46 becomes 64, and a one-point hole becomes nineteen. Scores of 10 or worse cap at 9, or an 11 and a 4 would read 114 instead of 49.

It runs alongside a main game at its own stake, and it is the side game that most needs a stake everyone actually agreed to, because the swings are the whole personality.

How it settles

$1 a point. Your 4-5 (45) against their 5-5 (55): $10 each. Next hole their man birdies while you both par — your 44 flips to nothing, their 35 against your 44 is nine points the wrong way, and the cart goes quiet.

Rivalry scores Vegas live — the rules stated on the first tee, the money running along the bottom of the card, and the settle done to the dollar when the last putt drops. The round goes into your group's permanent record, because a game this good deserves to be remembered past the car park.

Some scores take years to settle.

Rivalry is in closed beta with a handful of groups. Leave an email and we’ll tell you when there’s room.
