Match Play
The oldest game: holes up, holes down, and a handshake when it's over.
One match, the whole round, head to head or two against two on better ball.
The rules
Win a hole, go one up. The match ends when one side is up more holes than remain — 3&2 means three up with two to play. Stroke play forgives a blow-up hole slowly; match play forgives it instantly, because an 8 loses the hole exactly as much as a 5 would have.
Played net, with strokes on the indexed holes, the club game the format was invented for.
How it settles
Singles at $20. You're 2 down through 12, win three of the next four, close it 1 up on the last green. One bet, one handshake, one story.
Rivalry scores Match Play live — the rules stated on the first tee, the money running along the bottom of the card, and the settle done to the dollar when the last putt drops. The round goes into your group's permanent record, because a game this good deserves to be remembered past the car park.
Some scores take years to settle.
Rivalry is in closed beta with a handful of groups. Leave an email and we’ll tell you when there’s room.
